Mullvad's account model is unique in the industry. There is no email, no username, no password — you receive a random 16-digit account number. You top up with a subscription payment via credit card, cryptocurrency, PayPal, or physical cash mailed to Sweden. This makes Mullvad genuinely difficult to link to an individual — the most anonymous sign-up process of any commercial VPN we reviewed.
Mullvad is headquartered in Sweden, outside 5 Eyes and 9 Eyes, but inside 14 Eyes. Sweden's legal environment has no mandatory data-retention law for VPN providers. The no-logs policy has been independently audited. Mullvad has received government data requests and provided no usable data — confirming no logs exist.
